Description
The barbell standing calf raise is a free-weight calf exercise where you place a barbell across your upper back (like a squat) and perform calf raises from a step or raised platform. It allows heavy loading for calf development without a machine.

Barbell Standing Leg Calf Raise Instructions
- Set a barbell at upper-back height in a power rack. Step under and place it across your upper traps.
- Place a step plate, block, or sturdy board on the floor. Stand with the balls of your feet on the edge, heels hanging off.
- Unrack the bar. Stand tall. Brace your core.
- Lower your heels as far as possible for a deep calf stretch.
- Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible.
- Squeeze your calves hard at the top. Hold for one to two seconds.
- Lower under control. Full range of motion on every rep.
- Aim for 15 to 25 reps per set. Use moderate weight.
